Benefits of Having a Pet

Why do we love our pets so much? The list goes on. Pets are family; they bring endless joy to our lives all year round and make some of the best company come cozy weather and holiday time — it’s always a happy Thanksgiving with our pets by our side! In light of the upcoming holiday, we’ve listed some of the greatest benefits of having a pet. That way, as we go around the table stating what we’re thankful for, we know just what to say to honor our four-legged friends.

  1. They make tough days more manageable.
Whether you’re sad, sick, lonely, or just plain unmotivated, your pets are family and have that family mentality of being there for you through thick or thin. Not only is pet companionship great for our mental health, but studies have shown that dogs actually respond to human emotions and can detect a shift in our moods. In these cases, your pet will often try to make you feel better by curling up next to you to let you know you’re not alone. And with them, you never are!
  2. They keep us healthy.
This is perhaps one of the most significant benefits of having a pet. They increase opportunities to get outside, get active, and socialize. A few minutes of playing or walking a day can decrease cholesterol, blood pressure, and triglyceride levels. Owning a pet also promotes relaxation and reduces overall stress levels, which can wear us down a lot, both mentally and physically. This benefit is one of the primary reasons therapy animals have become more mainstream. From hospitals to senior living facilities, therapy animals make a huge difference in people’s lives.
  3. They give us purpose.
Among all the incredible things we learn from animals, our pets teach us to make the most of our time on earth. They keep us humble, they don’t judge or discriminate, they accept us for who we are, and there’s no limit to their love. They’re not here for a long time, but they rely on us to make the most of the time we do have together.
  4. They make great company.
You’ll never have a more loyal companion. Friends and family come to visit, but you can always find your furry friend by your side—and sometimes right under your feet. They keep you warm at night (even if they’re hogging the bed), they’ll never turn down an invitation to get out of the house, and they’re always ready to cozy up on the couch for a lazy Sunday.
  5. They provide constant entertainment.
They never cease to make us laugh, whether zooming about the house like their tail is on fire or belly up with their favorite plush toy in hand—or paw. Their personality shines! Life would simply be a bore without them in it.

How Do You Show Love For Your Pets?

Treats, car rides, trips to the dog park—everyone shows love differently! The Thanksgiving holiday often comes with a little extra time off work, which means more time to spend with your pet. Here are some simple things you can do together that will make all the difference in your pet’s eyes.

  • Plan out the entire day with things your pet loves and spend it together
  • Make a special treat just for your pet
  • Take a little road trip to cooler weather and give your pet a change of scenery
  • Splurge on new toys, bedding, and/or treats for your pet
  • Teach your pet a new trick (then reward them accordingly, of course)
  • Give your pet a spa day—bath, blow-dry, nail trim, the works!

It’s never a bad time to show your best pal a little love, whether Thanksgiving or any other time of the year. One of the best ways to show appreciation is by doing what you can to keep your pet in good health, starting with regular veterinary checkups! Reach out to your nearest AZPetVet location, and let’s work together to make this Thanksgiving holiday the happiest and healthiest yet!
